Soap flowers are not plastic and not real petals. Here is what goes into them, why they hold their shape for years, and how we build a bouquet in Seri Kembangan.

"Are they real?" is the first question we hear at our Seri Kembangan studio. The honest answer: the petals are handmade from soap, shaped one at a time, and the result sits somewhere between a flower and a keepsake.

The material

Each petal is moulded from a firm glycerin-based cosmetic soap, tinted with skin-safe colourant and lightly perfumed. The base is the same family of soap used in gift bars, which is why the petals feel cool and slightly waxy rather than plastic.

How a bloom is built

A rose starts as a small centre bud. Petals are curled by hand, warmed slightly so they take a curve, then layered outward and set on a wire stem wrapped in floral tape. A single large rose can take fifteen petals. Leaves and fillers are added last, then the whole head is set so it will not loosen in transit.

Why it lasts

There is no water in the flower and nothing organic to decay. No wilting, no dropping, no smell of old water. The two things that age it are ultraviolet light, which slowly fades the dye, and oily kitchen air, which holds dust. Keep it out of direct sun and it stays presentable for years.

What the scent is

The perfume is blended into the soap, not sprayed on, so it releases slowly. Expect a clear scent in the first months and a soft trace after a year. Never spray perfume to refresh it — alcohol damages the surface.

Can you wash with them?

Technically yes, and some customers keep a single bloom in a guest bathroom for exactly that. Most people keep them intact as decor, because once wet the shaped petal is gone.

Are soap flowers safe for sensitive skin?

The base is standard cosmetic soap. Contact is harmless, though we do not recommend washing with a scented bloom if the recipient has a fragrance allergy.

Do they melt in Malaysian heat?

No. Soap softens far above room temperature; a parked car in the sun is the only place to avoid.

Can a damaged bouquet be repaired?

Usually. Bring it to the studio and we can re-set petals or replace a bloom.
